Florida DOT and Staff Receive Awards

Bowie, MD – The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has received several awards for the development and deployment of the Next Generation Traveler Information System, also known as Florida’s 511 system. Launched in June 2009, the statewide Traveler Information System replaced the five regional 511 systems, providing a more consistent, user friendly and efficient interface to the travelling public.

The Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS) Central Florida Chapter recognized Florida’s 511 with their 2009 Innovative Transportation Solutions Award. The Florida 511 also received the 2009 Project of the Year award from the Institute of Transportation Engineers Big Bend Florida Chapter (BBFCITE). Finally, ITS Florida also recognized Gene Glotzbach, P.E. of the FDOT Intelligent Transportation Systems Section as ITS Professional of the Year.

Florida’s 511 covers the state’s busiest roadways, helping to reduce traffic congestion while improving roadway safety. Available in both English and Spanish, the system aggregates data from seven FDOT districts, Florida’s Turnpike, the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority and the Orlando-Orange County Expressway Authority. It provides personalized real-time traffic information that includes accidents, commuter travel times, congestion, lane closures, severe weather, construction, and emergency evacuation updates through an integrated Interactive Voice Recognition (IVR) and the www.FL511.com website.

“The recognition received by FDOT is a tribute to the hard work that went into the design, development, integration and deployment of this very large, complex system,” said Richard Stuntz, LogicTree CEO, adding “it is a remarkable achievement that is providing high quality, valuable services to the citizens of Florida.”
